We’re happy to announce that you can now log in to BDSMLR using your crypto wallet. 

In the future, this will let you take economically meaningful actions, like tipping your favorite bloggers with cryptocurrency. 

We’ve written a bit about cryptocurrencies, the blockchain technology they’re built on, and the digital assets that they let people create. 

It’s a revolutionary technology that has huge potential to improve payments and make better incentives for content creators, including those of you who create original and derivative content.

Going forward, new accounts can be created linked to your crypto wallet, also called a web3 wallet. 

If you have an existing BDSMLR account, you can also upgrade it to link your web3 wallet.

Don’t worry. We’ll also allow users to register and log in using their email and password. 

How does a passwordless account work?

If you already have a web3 wallet, go to the web3 Login tab and click Connect web3 Wallet instead of entering your username and password. 

That will pop up a window to authenticate your wallet. 

You’ll also need to enable web3 login in your Settings. 

After you have enabled web3 login for your account, you’ll only have to click Login Now and authenticate your Web3 wallet for all subsequent logins.

For users who already registered with an email and password, you can upgrade if you want to. But you don’t have to. 

Here’s how to create your own web3 wallet so you  an upgrade can link it to your BDSMLR account. 

1. Download MetaMask for Chrome. You can use other web3 wallets but we’re fans of MetaMask. 

2. Hit Create a Wallet.  

3. Enter your password. You'll receive your Secret Recovery Phrase which you’ll need to secure your web3 wallet. 

This will create your new web3 wallet, which you can then link to your BDSMLR account so you can log in without an email or password.

Why would I want to link my web3 wallet?

It’s easier than remembering a password because there’s nothing specific to BDSMLR that you have to remember. You do need to remember to back up your wallet though; treat it like the one in your pocket!

You no longer need to give your email address or worry about our database being hacked and your password stolen thanks to public key cryptography.

Some things to keep in mind 

You need to be careful to protect your secret recovery phrase because if you lose it, you lose access to your web3 wallet and any funds in it. Permanently. Nobody will be able to help you recover your account. So keep your recovery phrase safe!

If you already have a web3 wallet, you might have already linked some personal information to it that you’d rather not have linked to your BDSMLR persona. 

Or if you’re using a new wallet, you might at some point in the future inadvertently link something to your BDSMLR wallet that you’d rather have separate. Information on the blockchain is a permanent record. Keep your identity safe!
